DeLay: “You have to be a natural born citizen”
Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has joined a number of other notable politicos in questioning the legitimacy of Mr. Obama’s eligibility.
According to WorldNetDaily:
WASHINGTON – Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay pulled no punches on Chris Matthews “Hardball”show on MSNBC today when asked if he is a “birther.”
“Well, I’d like the president to produce his birth certificate,” said DeLay. “I can. Most illegal aliens here in America can. Why can’t the president of the United States produce his birth certificate? … Chris, will you do me a favor? Will you ask the president to show me his gift certificate — I mean, his birth certificate?”
DeLay’s outspokenness on the subject stands in stark contrast to any current member of Congress.
Implying Barack Obama is being unfairly singled out for questioning on the issue, Matthews asked DeLay whether anyone has asked him for proof of his birthplace, DeLay responded, “The Democrats sued me for being a resident of Texas. That’s just like asking me for my birth certificate.”
“Chris, the Constitution of the United States specifically says you have to be a natural born citizen,” DeLay said.
“I know,” Matthews responded. “But I’ve never asked you for yours.”
“Ask me!” DeLay responded. “I’ll give it to you!”
Matthews said seeing a birth announcement in the Honolulu newspapers was enough to convince him of Obama’s birth in Hawaii.
“Newspapers!” responded DeLay. “Is a newspaper article an official document?”
“No, it’s not,” conceded Matthews. “It’s just common sense that we’re talking about here. Common sense.”
“There isn’t anybody in America that’s been born in America that didn’t get a birth certificate at Obama’s age,” said DeLay. “Maybe at my age there are people born out in — “

“Please, do not project the simplistic stereotypes you hold on people who understand the world to be more complex than you do.”
Back at ya! “Birthers” this and “birthers” that…
dunstvangeet,
My point is that the Court went through very detailed analysis, examining statutes and laws that pertained to this particular case. I noted elsewhere that the Court also stated that dual citizenship is problematic. The Perkins Court found natural born citizenship in this instance for the issuance of a passport. As legal scholars have already stated, natural born citizenship has not been defined as it pertains to presidential eligibility.
Sharon 2:
And what does what somebody I don’t even know wrote have to do with me? If it is your contention that right wing extremists are all racist, that is your opinion, not mine. Please, do not project the simplistic stereotypes you hold on people who understand the world to be more complex than you do.
I do not care what you believe on that issue. I just want you to stop lying about what I have or have not said.
How tough is that to ask?
C. n. natus:
Just as I insisted that I was an Italian citizen at birth… but you insisted otherwise. You insisted that the Italian government didn’t even know that I existed, which is completely true. You insisted that I had to actually apply for recognition of that status, which is true.
You insisted that this meant I was wrong and not born a dual citizen at all.
So… if you are not a total hypocrite, you must also insist that Obama (or his supporters or media) are wrong to claim that Obama was born a dual citizen or was ever a dual citizen at all. Because exactly like me the British (and Kenyan) government didn’t even know that he existed. But unlike me, he never applied for recognition of those other citizenships, so unlike me he is still not a dual citizen.
So… like I said Natus, you have painted yourself into a corner. Don’t blame me for this argument… it is yours entirely.
LOL… oh Natus. I long ago lost all hope of you being able to prove anything you write. You just don’t have it in you.
Gong!!!!
It says no such thing,
It says the status (quality) of “naturels Francaise” is automatic and obtained at birth. The only thing that you have to apply for are the “benefits of that quality.”
Just like Italian Law. Just like British law. Just like American law. Just like the law of every nation on the planet that grants jus sanguinis citizenship to children of citizens born overseas.
Every jus sanguinis citizen of every country must apply and document their status before they can access the benefits of the citizenship that is, by law, already theirs.
You have literally ripped the guts out of your own argument. Thank you for that.
PS. Smoking weed was never among my vices. Is it fun?
C. n. natus:
How is it that you keep forgetting? It has been authenticated.

HD,
You must be smoking weed…Obama (or his supporters or media) admits he was a british subject at birth, and a Kenyan citizen, and an Indonesian citizen…
Don’t expect me to prove what He and his supporters claim, when those claims damage his assertion to be POTUS…
You need to call him up and complain….
If you won’t believe what He says, then join the birther clan…otherwise, you find yourself even a more zealous zealot to defend him than he himself…and for that I conclude you must be smoking weed…
As for the French question on Hugenots, read the citation I gave, it expressly says that such grants of citizenship are not retroactive, but only come into being upon application…if the presidents never applied, they were NEVER french citizens…and for your information, there have been no Italian-American citizens who were presidents….nor is anyone an Italian citizen unless he is recognized by Italy to be one…if you don’t like that, write Berlusconi…
Sharon, part of the opinion includes this line:
So, the court did declare Elg to be a natural born citizen of the United States, despite the fact that she most likely had at one point both Swedish and American citizenship.
Therefore, being a citizen of another nation doesn’t mean that you aren’t a natural born citizen. Technically, the court below declared this. However, the Supreme Court said that they basically agreed with it, and wanted the order modified to include the Secretary of State.
Perkins v. Elg does make it very hard to argue that dual citizenship makes you ineligible to be a Natural Born Citizen.
Yup, I did accuse Phil of that. But that has nothing to do with the discussion we’re having. You are trying to change the subject. (HD)
I am sorry! I didn’t realize you were so naive to not know that people associate the charge of right wing extremism with racism, as did the expert above, who used the example of Von Brunn. It is stereotyping that you are guilty of and yes, that includes racism. I guess you would have me believe that unless one actually uses the exact words “You are a racist,” then racism is never charged. Interesting. I am glad to know that you don’t believe anyone here is a racist.
