Saxby in Senatorial Runoff Spotlight

(Double post alert: redstate.com, peachpundit.com!)

Next stop on the filibuster express? Georgia. With things not looking so good in Alaska and Minnesota, Georgia appears to be the firewall that the GOP has for hanging on to the filibuster maneuver in the Senate. From the AJC:

Chambliss’ campaign on Monday confirmed that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will come to Cobb County on Thursday to stump for Chambliss. Former

Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will also come to Georgia for Chambliss — possibly this Sunday — and an invitation has been extended to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has not confirmed.

Martin continued to tie himself to President-elect Barack Obama in new television ads. His campaign has invited Obama to come to the state to campaign for the Atlanta attorney and former state lawmaker. Martin’s campaign is also using Obama’s ground troops in the runoff to get out the vote.

Obama’s former campaign workers are now assisting Martin in his 25 offices across the state, Martin said. Those ground troops, he said, are more important than big-name politicians for getting voters back to the polls. Some prominent Democrats have volunteered to come down for his campaign, Martin said, without offering specifics.

Palmettoscoop.com reports that President-elect Obama’s Ohio staff is headin’ down to Dixie. See also Dick Morris’ latest blog posting in his push to help spread the word about Saxby.

While it is true that Saxby’s Yea vote for the $700 billion bailout package got him into trouble here in GA, what some folks seem to forget is that we the Georgia voters also have the benefit of 20/20 hindsight RE: the 2008 general election. We know what’s at stake (potentially), and I think Saxby will pull this one out.

I’ll be sure to eat crow if I’m wrong :)

I will be in Duluth, Georgia on Sunday to campaign for Saxby Chambliss and to talk about the FairTax. If you live in Georgia I hope you can join Senator Chambliss, Congressman John Linder, Syndicated Radio Host Neal Boortz and me on Sunday, November 16 from 2:30 PM to 4 PM at the Gwinnett Center, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, Georgia.

As you probably are aware, Senator Saxby Chambliss is facing a runoff election on December 2. The Democrats have made it clear they will do everything they can to defeat Senator Chambliss in the runoff election. They still haven’t given up their dream of a filibuster proof 60 Senate seat majority. We must make certain they are not successful. But even more important than that, we must do all that we can to help a strong conservative Republican Senator return to Washington.

Since being elected to the Senate in 2002, Saxby has worked hard every day to support conservative principles. He is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Rules Committee and he is the ranking Republican member of the Senate committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Saxby is known and has always been known as a strong advocate for the United States Military. He is also a very strong supporter of the FairTax. During a debate with his Democrat opponent, Senator Chambliss said the FairTax “lets consumers determine their tax rate based on their consumption levels. The FairTax is what it says it is – it’s fair.”

During my visit to Duluth, Congressman John Linder, the guiding force of the FairTax and I will have a chance to join Senator Chambliss in discussing the FairTax. I have said many times that I intend to put a going out of business sign on the door of the Internal Revenue Service.
Why do I support the FairTax? There are several reasons, but at the top of the list is the fact that the FairTax will replace all income and payroll taxes with a simple, transparent and fair national retail sales tax.
Our current progressive tax system penalizes us for working harder and becoming more successful. As we climb the ladder of success, our taxes increase, with government taking a bigger and bigger bite of our earnings. The FairTax doesn’t punish the American people for their success. Nor does it punish the old fashioned virtues of hard work and thrift. Instead it rewards and encourages them.

If you live in Georgia, or close by to Duluth, please join us. We need your help. If you can afford to, I also ask that you make a contribution of $25 or more in support of Saxby.

Standing strong for our principles,
Mike Huckabee
